The City Rail Link (CRL) project in Auckland is a game-changer for the city's public transport system, and the recent public open day events have given Aucklanders a glimpse of what's to come. The CRL, set to open on September 13th, is the country's largest transport infrastructure project, with three and a half kilometers of tunnels and a $5.5 billion price tag. The first open day at Maungawhau Station (formerly Mount Eden Station) attracted a steady stream of visitors, with 17,000 people registered to attend. The station, which has been closed since 2020 for construction, is now a modern, spacious hub with four platforms and a visually striking design inspired by the surrounding volcanic landscape. The station's dramatic architecture, natural materials, and spacious platforms create a unique experience, as Auckland Transport's website highlights.
One of the key benefits of the CRL is the East-West connection, which will reduce travel times and eliminate delays at the bottleneck at Newmarket Station. For example, Catherine Hill, who currently takes the train at Kingsland and transits at Waitematā Station, will now only need to catch one train to get to her workplace in Panmure. Similarly, Swanson resident Jonathan Rankin will save an hour of travel time by taking the train directly to his workplace off Karangahape Road. West Auckland resident Harrison Fernandes-Burnard estimates that the CRL will cut his daily commute by 20 minutes.
The CRL also improves accessibility for people with disabilities. John Fiu, a disability advocate and wheelchair user, was pleased with the lifts and user-friendly design at the station. He plans to use the train to attend his upcoming boxing match in October.
The station's design also incorporates impressive artworks, such as a feature wall depicting Maungawhau (Mount Eden) with motifs and imagery inspired by the mountain and its cultural significance. Bella Cunnington Waugh, an Aucklander, praised the station's aesthetics and the connection to the surrounding maunga.
The CRL's 'First Look' events, which will continue on August 15th and 22nd, provide an opportunity for Aucklanders to explore the new stations and plan their journeys using the new Journey Planner tool. The project's successful execution and positive feedback from the public indicate that the CRL will significantly enhance Auckland's public transport system, making it more efficient, accessible, and user-friendly.
